Both generations are true DIY systems with pre-charged Quick Connect line sets and no vacuum pump required. The trade-off that doesn't show up in the table: like all DIY-focused brands, long-term service can be a weak spot, since many local HVAC technicians are reluctant to work on homeowner-installed systems.

Capacity

MRCOOL DIY has been the most recognizable DIY mini split line since the 4th gen launched around 2020. The 5th gen started rolling out in late 2023, driven by updated SEER2 standards and the AIM Act's refrigerant phasedown.

The biggest capacity change: 4th gen multi-zone condensers topped out at 48,000 BTU supporting 5 zones, while the 5th gen adds a 55,000 BTU condenser supporting up to 6 indoor units — plus a new 6,000 BTU indoor handler for small rooms that would otherwise be oversized. More zones per condenser means fewer wall penetrations and simpler electrical for whole-home projects.

Keep in mind that “6 zones” doesn't mean unlimited capacity — total connected indoor BTU still has to match the outdoor unit's spec sheet. Run the numbers on your actual rooms before buying either generation.

Refrigerant

Refrigerant: The Biggest Technical Shift.

The single largest difference between the generations is the refrigerant. Most 4th gen units use R-410A, while 5th gen models move to R-454B — an A2L, mildly flammable blend with roughly 80% lower global warming potential. Fifth gen models deliver roughly 10–12% higher SEER2 than comparable 4th gen units. Install

Installation and Compatibility.

Both generations share the same install concept: mount the indoor unit, drill the wall hole, connect the Quick Connect fittings, and test — no vacuum pump. The 5th gen introduces redesigned fittings and a new DIYPro communication cable, but the step-by-step process is nearly identical, and both support app and voice control over WiFi.

One critical warning: you generally cannot mix 4th gen outdoor units with 5th gen indoor units. Different refrigerants, operating pressures, and control electronics mean cross-generation parts aren't guaranteed compatible — so a failed component on an aging system can turn into a whole-system replacement. Always check MRCOOL's official compatibility charts before buying replacement parts.

Support

Parts Availability and Long-Term Support.

The first years of 5th Gen ownership may involve less mature parts availability. The 4th Gen platform was sold for years, so distributors, technicians, and owners have had more time to accumulate:
